This year has been one filled with happiness and sadness. Our group of alumni has lost three wonderful people that were near and dear to many of us. Some of us were fortunate enough to pay our respects in person, but all of us that knew them keep them in our hearts . . .
Brett Lee Smith, 39, died in November 1997 of cancer. Brett was a resident of Waukee, Iowa, and was an instrumental band instructor at Perry Middle School. Many of his students attended the funeral and it was obvious the impact he had on so many young lives. Many Alumni Band members were able to fulfil the family's wishes by attending the funeral and playing ISU Fights. He and his wife, Patty, were active Alumni Band members, and he had made every reunion he could attend, except the last one - and even then he wanted to come in a wheelchair. Brett was also a member of the Iowa Bandmasters Association, president of Mid-Iowa Control-Liners, a member of the Pontiac Club of Iowa and the Academy of Model Aeronautics. He is survived by his wife Patty and two sons, David and Michael.
Betsy Ball, 41, also met an unfortunate death from cancer in November. Betsy was a teacher at Southeast Polk High School where she taught science and was also a member of the National and Iowa State Education Associations. She is survived by her husband and two sons, Ben and Michael, and two daughters, Katie and Anne.
Zeda Piersol, wife of Frank Piersol ("Uncle Frank"), passed away this year. Zeda was a gracious, charming, and loving individual. Her constant positive attitude toward life was infectious. She was a wonderful role model for everyone who knew her. ISU Alumni have lost a great friend and will miss her dearly. If you would like to drop Dr. Piersol a note, he is still living in Iowa City (613 Granada Ct., Iowa City, IA 52246).
