Christensen Receives Prestigious Award

Joseph Christensen, Director of Bands at Iowa State University, has been elected into the American Bandmasters Association. The American Bandmasters Association is recognized as the most prestigious honorary organization in the world for band directors and composers. The association honors musicians of distinction in the concert band field and elects musicians to membership after a year-long review process. Since the association was established in 1929 by Edwin Franco Goldman and John Philip Sousa, only 511 musicians have been elected. Current membership is 255 members.

Mr. Christensen is currently in his 25th year of teaching at ISU, where he continues to oversee the band program that includes nine bands and five jazz combos. He has conducted and adjudicated bands throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Mr. Christensen has served as president of the Big 8 Band Directors Association, the Iowa Music Educators Association, and the Iowa Bandmasters Association. He also has been co-chairman of the Iowan's Alliance for Arts Education and Vice President of the Ames International Orchestra Association.
