The 1997 Homecoming reunion was a time for reminiscing, reflection, and (of course) refreshments. The festivities began on Friday night, October 24, at the "Varsity" band rehearsal at Clide Williams field, followed by an informal gathering at the Best Western Starlight Village. It was a great get-together with 180 alums, food, drinks, "Varsity" pep band, entertainment, and the always embarrassing half-time video from the previous year. Many people ate too much, drank too much, and stayed up too late, which is easy to do when you come to Ames. Isn't it funny how you think you can still do what you did when you were in school . . .
Saturday morning was a rude awakening for us, as the weather did not want to cooperate. Cold rain and brisk winds made for an interesting day. Alumni band ponchos were at a premium! Our rehearsal was under the overhang in the stadium, to accomodate our old bones which were aching with arthritis due to the rain and cold. When we finally did get to practice, the practice field was a bit muddy and made for interesting flips - or did we mean slips? The music was classic, (no, not from the '70's) In the Hall of the Tuba King, and Hooked on Classics ("Carmen" and "1812 Overture").
The spouses enjoyed a nice coffee hour while we rehearsed, and we really enjoyed a nice warm brunch in Scheman when it was over. At the meeting, the elections were held and awards presented. Our president elect is Jerry Hartman, secretary Lori Sanderson, newsletter editors Paula Olson and Joanne Tubbs, public relations Deb Sinclair, directors at larg Brian Boesenberg, Sue Chatterton, and Stacy Frett.
Karen Boesenberg received the Grace Note Award. Bob Fitch won the grand prize raffle drawing which was a free trip to homecoming for 1998, including hotel accomodations and alumni band registration fees.
The game was as exciting as ever, as ISU pulled out an astonishing victory over Baylor. We were all witness to the only victory of the season. Well, not counting Colorado, which I suppose is a moral victory of some sort! The band was perfect, and won the first place best of class alumni band trophy for the day.
