The Iowa State University Bands has been invited to march in the year 2000 New Year's Parade in LONDON, ENGLAND!! This is a GREAT opportunity for us in general terms, but also specifically for that time - what a great place for a millenium celebration! We have not accepted yet (the details are still coming in), but since we only have one alumni band newsletter per year, I wanted to get the preliminary information to you as soon as possible.

I have made this same trip in the past with another university, and believe me, it is an outstanding experience. It is the kind of trip I like - a couple of hrhearsals, one stand still performance, one parade, and the rest of the time is free. When I went before, there were some planned activities (Westminster Abby, Stratford on Avon, Windsor Castle, etc.), but a significant amount of time was left free for individual experiences (British Museum and Library, a stage show, the Tower of London, etc.) A preliminary price looks to be somewhere between $1700 and $1800. That includes round-trip airfare, seven or eight - (I've forgotten which) nights lodging, two meals per day, and all the planned touring.

We will keep you posted via the Varsity and Alumni Band web sites, next year's newsletter, and word-of-mouth as more information is available. As I said before, we had not accepted the invitation, and we have to work out MANY details, but just the invitation is exciting and a nice recognition of this program and the many years of hard work by countless dedicated members.
