Band Director - Marty Province's Letter

Dear Band Alums,

Year number two is now in the books. Items that will stand out in my mind include: hosting two rounds of the NCAA tournament; a standing ovation (that lasted 30 seconds of more) from the Missouri crowd; over 100 trumpets in one long line at Homecoming; teaching drill on a VERY sloppy field for Homecoming; and getting to know many more of you! Also, in case you have not heard, the Varsity Band band won second place in the non-traditional float contest at VEISHEA this year. (To be honest, I didn't even know that we were entered or that there even was a non-traditional float contest.) Finally, one of the great memories of this past year will always be of Homecoming and watching my first group of alums return for Alumni Band.

I have finally learned my way around the rest of Music Hall, though I still have to ask about most of the other buildings on campus. And forget about going outside of Ames. One of my hopes for this summer is that my family and I will be able to visit some of the interesting places throughout Iowa about which I have only been able to read thus far. (This assumes the Mr.C will let me have some time away from the office!)

As the band staff prepares for the coming year, I only look for bigger and better things. The "Varsity" Band has had the (now) annual show-planning meeting, and next fall we will be entertaining the crowd with shows titled "Back to the Beach," "Spies Like Us," and "2001 and Beyond" (Sci-Fi), as well as a "Favorite Hits of the Band" show. I am looking for one more show, vacillating between "The Wizard of Oz" and a musical travelogue. For the Alumni Band, my goal is to make it the largest in the history of the organization. As I understand it, two years ago was the third largest ever, so we only have a little way to go for this year!

As I wrote last year, your interest and involvement are unsurpassed by any other similar group in the country (if there even is a "similar" group anywhere in the country.) As I move into my third year at ISU let me say "THANK YOU" to you both as individuals and as an organization for all you do to support the continuing band program at Iowa State. I look forward to this and coming years.

I'll see you on October 10 for the Missouri game!

GO CYCLONES!

Marty
