Dear Band Alums,
What a GREAT year to join the Iowa State staff! Two NCAA basketball tournaments, a Heisman Trophy runner-up, and (even though the fortunes of the football team were not what we had all hoped for) the Marching Band played to virtually full houses every week, I even survived my first VEISHEA relatively unscathed! At this time last year, I had just moved to Iowa and was still trying to find my office and the best way to get from my house to Music Hall. With everything that was going on (including my oral comprehensive exams in Colorado the Monday before band camp), last fall was one of the most hectic that I can recall. Even with that, I have to say it was also one of the most enjoyable. The students here are great, and the support and enthusiasm from the alumni (and specifically the Alumni Band) is wonderful, I am convinced that your interest and involvement are unsurpassed by any group in the country. (There may not even be a "similar" group anywhere in the country.)
As the band staff prepares for the coming year, I look for bigger and better things. The "Varsity" Band has had the annual show-planning meeting. This fall, we will be entering the crowd with music from West Side Story, The Blues Brothers, and two other shows of Latin and Classical music. My goal for the Alumni Band is to make it the largest band in the history of the organization. As I understand it, last year was the second largest ever, so we only have a little way to go for this year!
Since I was so busy learning the job last fall, I am sure I did not say thank you enough, so . . . "THANK YOU" both as individuals and as an organization for all you do to support the continuing band program at Iowa State. I look forward to this and coming years and getting to know as many of you as possible. I'll see you on October 24!
GO CYCLONES!
Marty P.
