Executive Board Meeting Minutes - General Business Meeting

ISU Alumni Band Annual Meeting
Saturday, September 28, 1996
Scheman Building

The 1996 business meeting for the Iowa State Alumni Band was called to order by President Deb (Goering) Sinclair. Deb thanked everyone for attending this year. She announced that this year was extra special because of the special endorsement by the Iowa Sesquicentennial Commission and that this year's group was the 2nd biggest in history. Roll call was called by the decades. Board members, staff and special guests were introduced and letters from those unable to attend were read.

Joseph Christensen addressed the band by saying, "It's a great joy to have you back." He thanked the band for their financial support. The "Varsity" Band was able to buy new uniforms without implementing an emergency fundraising campaign. Mr. "C" then introduced Marty Province who welcomed the band and proceeded to predict a victory for the football team, showing great faith and optimism.

Ken Anderson gave an update on the fund drive. Ken also informed us that 50 years ago ISU hosted Oklahoma for Homecoming. The score was a 63-0 loss. But in the true band spirit, the 6:30 club was established.

Mark Pankey of the ISU Foundation spoke on the Adopt-The-Band program. This program has been one of the Most successful programs he has been involved with. The are still looking for a corporate sponsor for the band. The asking price is $35,000 - $50, 000 per year. A special gift was also presented to Dennis Goering for his generous donation of $10,000 to help purchase new uniforms.

The group decided to explore fundraising opportunities using phone bills. Marty Dostalik will look into it.

Mr. C announced the recipients for the 1996-1997 scholarship fund. This year they were Kenny Drefke - drum major, Doug Souleyrette - trumpet, and Steve Smyth - drumline. The endowment fund consists of $13,853 with $450 in cash.

Brian Bosenberg reported on the Basketball Pep Band and VEISHEA. Jay Chapman reported that they will be making new music folders for the pep band. Jeff Wellman went over by-law changes and the changes passed unanimously. Dennis Carlson, President-Elect, announced the election results.

Awards were also presented. Dennis Goering presented prizes for the first golf outing. Recognition was given to those alumns at their first Alumni Band outing, those that have attended all of our reunions, and those that have attended all reunions since graduation. Sally Burmester traveled the furthest, from Venice, California. The Chester Smith Award for the oldest attending alumni went to Merle Hunt, 1941. The Grace Note Award was presented to Doris Goering. The Tutti Award was given to Mark Pankey of the ISU Foundation. B.J. Kerns presented the 1996 Noteworthy Service Award to Jim Wilcox.

Letters from past directors were read to the band. Roger Cichy, past director, was presented with an official red Alumni Band jacket for attending the weekend and for bringing special notoriety to the ISU band program. Frank Piersol, our special guest for this year, was also presented with an official red jacket as well as a sweatshirt which read, "Uncle Frank's Marching Band - ISU." Mr. Piersol was lovingly referred to as "Uncle Frank" during his tenure at ISU.

After final announcements, Mr. C made a presentation to President Deb Sinclair for her hard work with the band. The meeting was adjourned at 12:01 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jerry Hartman, Sec.
